Scrutiny brings clarity on Mayoral Combined Authority recruitment

Image
Cllr Denis Healy, member of the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority Scrutiny Committee and Leader of the Opposition on East Riding of Yorkshire Council, has welcomed the publication of detailed information on recruitment and staffing at the Combined Authority. The issue was first raised by Cllr Healy at a meeting of the Combined Authority Board, following questions from local residents seeking reassurance on value for money, governance and the rapid establishment of the organisation. At the time, the question prompted a robust exchange. However, the Combined Authority has now provided a comprehensive written response setting out its recruitment processes, senior management structure and associated costs. “ My role on the Scrutiny Committee is to ask questions on behalf of residents and ensure openness, transparency and value for money in how public funds are used. The Combined Authority is a new organisation, and it is entirely reasonable that people want to understa...

Councillors Celebrate Success of 60-Ton Compost Giveaway, But Demand Fairer Scheme for All East Riding Communities

Image
East Riding Liberal Democrats have welcomed the successful rollout of the council’s annual community recycling scheme, which saw 60 tonnes of free compost returned to local residents this May. However, party leaders are calling on the local authority to expand the scheme in the future, arguing that several communities are currently being left behind. The popular initiative, organised by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s (ERYC) waste and recycling team, distributed approximately 5,000 bags of compost across eight regional events in Pocklington, Beverley, Preston, Goole, Hornsea, Carnaby, Withernsea, and Driffield. From Brown Bins to Bloom: True Circular Recycling The initiative serves as a tangible example of the circular economy in action. In total, 60 tonnes of compost were given away, with each attending driver receiving two free bags. What makes the scheme unique is its source: the compost is made entirely from the food and garden waste collected from residents...

Behind Closed Doors: Addressing the Surge in Domestic Abuse During the World Cup

Image
As anticipation builds for the World Cup, communities across the nation are gearing up for a month of intense sporting drama. However, behind the flags, the packed pubs, and the collective cheers lies a darker, more troubling reality. For many individuals, major football tournaments do not bring celebration, they bring fear. With the tournament set to run until 19 July, local authorities and support services are issuing an urgent rallying cry. Victims of domestic abuse are being strongly encouraged to break the silence and access the vital lifeline of support services available to them. The Toxic Mix: Major Matches, Alcohol, and High Emotions It is a well-documented but horrifying phenomenon: when major sporting tournaments take place, reports of domestic incidents spike significantly. Data shared by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council highlights that the risk of abuse escalates around high-stakes matches. The reasons are complex but predictable. Big games act as a pressure cook...

Lib Dem Councillors Champion Expansion of "Sustainable Villages" Initiative.

Cllr Margaret Corless and East Riding Liberal Democrats are backing plans to roll out successful community-led green initiatives across more local villages, following the proven success of a non-profit organisation in North Ferriby. Sustainable Ferriby, a Community Interest Company (CIC), was recently featured in the " Best of East Riding Eco Tour " for its work helping households and community groups cut carbon emissions and slash energy bills.  Local Lib Dem Councillor Margaret Corless and Mie Mie Kyaing, are now working with the organisation to expand the scheme to neighbouring villages. This scheme very much aligns with Liberal Democrat policies to empower communities, decentralise energy production, and accelerate the transition to net-zero. Proving the Power of Local Action Councillor Margaret Corless is very proud to be the representative for South Hunsley, with groups such as Sustainable Ferriby leading the way and an inspiration to the wider East Riding...

Speeding vehicles are a major concern across our community. Your local Liberal Democrat team hears this regularly on the doorstep and at the recentpublic meeting.  Residents have told us enough is enough, and we are determined to work closely with Humberside Police, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, our Town Council, and most importantly you, to secure long-term solutions. As members of our local community, your lived experiences are the most valuable resource we have to build a rock-solid evidence base.  We are backing two brilliant initiatives designed to empower local people to take control of our streets: 1. Operation Snap: Put the Brakes on Bad Driving Humberside Police are committed to making our roads safer, but they cannot be everywhere at once.  That is why they run Operation Snap, and why your local Lib Dem team is urging residents to get involved. If you witness a driving offence and capture it on a dashcam, a CCTV system, or a mo...
