Local Councillors Demand Action as Government Unveils New Fly-Tipping Strategy

​The government has launched a national consultation on new measures to combat fly-tipping, including "clean-up squads," conditional cautions requiring unpaid work, and a maximum on-the-spot fine increase to £5,000.
​While the East Riding Liberal Democrats welcome tougher penalties, local representatives and national spokespeople argue that more must be done to protect communities from organised waste criminals.
​Local and National Perspectives
​Councillor Phil Redshaw, East Riding Liberal Democrat Environment Spokesperson, emphasised the need for comprehensive local enforcement:
​"Fly-tipping is a blight on our communities and countryside, and local people are right to say enough is enough. I’ve been campaigning for stronger action against fly-tipping in East Yorkshire for some years, so I welcome this new focus. Increased fines are very welcome and should act as a real deterrent, making people think twice before dumping waste illegally. But we must keep going. We need to use every tool available to us to catch fly-tippers across East Yorkshire. That means looking at a range of CCTV options, including fixed cameras, mobile cameras and other technology that can be used in fly-tipping hotspots. The message should be simple: dump it in East Yorkshire, and you can expect to be caught  and face a fine that makes you think twice."

​At Westminster, Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson Tim Farron MP warned that broader systemic issues remain unaddressed:
​"The Government is finally listening to our party’s calls for tougher fines for waste crime, but its measures fall woefully short for the communities that live around these sites... We need an independent review of the whole system to crack down on these organised gangs once and for all."

​Key Lib Dem Proposals
​To tackle the financial burden on taxpayers and local authorities, the East Riding Liberal Democrats are advocating for:
​Tip-Off Rewards: Up to £5,000 for residents providing information leading to successful prosecutions.
​Affordable Disposal: Keeping bulky waste collection fees low to deter illegal dumping.
​Expanded Surveillance: Deploying mobile CCTV in rural and urban hotspots.

As consultations continue and local issues mount, the East Riding Liberal Democrats remain committed committed to protecting taxpayers, holding polluters financially accountable, and preserving the region's countryside.

Civic Leaders Praise Goole as Town Hosts Historic Yorkshire Day Celebrations ​Goole had the great honour of hosting Yorkshire Day, marking the same year as the town celebrated its 200th birthday. ​Town Mayor of Goole, Cllr Kevin Flynn, hosted civic dignitaries from across the region as Goole stood at the heart of Yorkshire for the Official Yorkshire Day Civic Celebration, organised by Goole Town Council on behalf of The Yorkshire Society.
