East Riding Households Urged to Claim Overlooked Council Tax Support Amid Cost-of-Living Pressures
Many households across the East Riding are failing to claim crucial financial assistance that could significantly lower their council tax bills. Individuals on low incomes, those receiving state benefits, part-time workers, the self-employed, and residents who have recently undergone a change in personal circumstances are encouraged to check their eligibility for council tax support.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council provides this initiative to alleviate cost-of-living pressures for residents struggling with household bills. Eligibility is determined by individual financial situations, taking into account household income, savings, dependents, and benefit statuses. Crucially, residents do not need to be unemployed or renting to qualify; homeowners and employed individuals may also be entitled to relief.
Local councillors have emphasised the critical importance of ensuring these funds reach vulnerable residents who may be struggling in silence.
"Many families and individuals across our region are quietly dealing with immense financial strain while help sits available in local authority accounts," said Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Heslop-Mullens, representing Bridlington North. "Whether you are working part-time, self-employed, or simply facing a squeeze from inflation, I strongly urge everyone to check what they are entitled to and submit an application."
Adding to these concerns, Councillor Rick Arrand, Bridlington South, noted that community awareness remains one of the biggest hurdles in getting money to those who need it most.
"We see firsthand how deeply the rising cost of living is affecting families across East Riding, especially in our coastal towns like Bridlington" "No one should have to choose between heating their home and paying essential bills when support schemes are designed precisely to bridge that gap. Please look into these options and reach out for help." said Councillor Rick Arrand
Beyond standard council tax relief, additional aid is accessible via the government-backed Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF). The scheme delivers short-term crisis payments for sudden financial emergencies, such as unexpected bills or abrupt losses of income, alongside housing payments designed to prevent rent arrears and secure tenancies for those receiving housing element of Universal Credit or housing benefit. The fund also connects residents with professional budgeting guidance and benefit advisory services to secure long-term financial stability.
