A Beacon of Hope for Our Youth: Reflecting on the DIY SOS Cherry Tree Big Build.

Last night, viewers across the country and many of us here in East Yorkshire, tuned in to BBC One to witness a moment of pure community magic. The DIY SOS: Big Build special for the Cherry Tree Youth Hub was a heart-swelling reminder of what can be achieved when a community refuses to take "no" for an answer.

For years, the youth of the Cherry Tree area have been the forgotten face of local provision. Since the pandemic, they were forced to meet in a gazebo in a park, enduring the biting East Yorkshire winters while waiting for a place to call their own. Last night, the world finally saw the result of the "Big Build" that changed everything.

Community Spirit vs. Council Inaction
For the Liberal Democrats, this project is a testament to local resilience. While we have consistently campaigned for better youth provision, it was the "wonderful people" of Beverley, alongside Nick Knowles, the Gladiators, and hundreds of local tradespeople, who stepped in to fix a gap left by years of underfunding.

The build was a massive collaborative effort involving:
GRAHAM & YOR4Good: The contractors for Jock's Lodge went above and beyond, volunteering their time and engineering expertise.
Local Trades: Volunteers from as far as Devon and as close as our own high street worked 18-hour days to finish the hub in record time.
The People of Beverley: Providing food, materials, and sheer manual labour to ensure our kids had a safe haven.

"It feels like a home"
Our own Liberal Democrat Councillor Tony Henderson, who represents the Minster and Woodmansey ward and has worked tirelessly as the treasurer for Cherry Tree for 12 years and has spent the past 6 years fighting to create the youth hub, was featured in the episode during the emotional reveal. Reflecting on the finished building, Tony said:
"It’s just amazing, really overwhelming. This centre is purposely built for children in this area and it will change lives. What we can do with this building is create a safe space for young people. I’ve been inside and it feels like home. Seeing this facility completed makes the last six years of dedicated volunteer work truly meaningful. I am honored to see the vision materialise and to know this hub will serve as a vital resource for thousands of youth in our community.”

A Legacy Beyond the Screen
The episode showed the 17-day journey from a muddy field to a vibrant, state-of-the-art hub. But the story didn't end when the cameras stopped rolling. Since the hub opened its doors, over 430 young people have registered, with around 150 visiting every single week.

The new facility complete with its communal areas, outdoor gym, and meeting rooms, is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a foundation for the future. As Lib Dems, we believe that when you give young people the right framework, they don't just grow, they help our entire community thrive.

Cllr Denis Healy- Group Leader East Riding Liberal Democrats.
“I’m so proud of our community here in Beverley and East Riding! A massive thank you to Tony for his hard work in making this happen, and to DIY SOS, GRAHAM, and YOR4Good for their incredible support.
This project shines a light on a part of Beverley that often goes unnoticed, bringing it to prime time on BBC1 this Christmas.
Tony truly embodies the Lib Dem spirit—working quietly behind the scenes to restore hope where it’s needed most. This is exactly why we do what we do: to change lives and build hope together.”

“Tony and Jo should be feeling so proud that he made this happen. You have transformed lives. Silently, quietly and effectively.
This is what politics is about. It’s not about the glory, it's about making a difference.
Tony and his partner Jo together have made more of an impact on that community than anyone has done or will ever do, they have brought hope where there was despair and sadness. Whatever else anyone achieves in life, you cannot get better than that.
Tony has given this forgotten community so much hope and their gratitude knows no bounds.”

Last night was a celebration of Beverly’s spirit. Now, we must ensure that spirit continues by protecting and supporting our local youth services for years to come.
