A Fair Deal for Withernsea: New Affordable Homes on the Horizon

The East Riding Liberal Democrats have welcomed the announcement of 40 new affordable homes in Withernsea, marking a vital step toward tackling the local housing crisis. In a partnership between East Riding Council and Gleeson Homes, the "Sands Reach" development on Hollym Road will breathe new life into the plot of disused land.

The project, which is set to begin its phased delivery in 2026, will provide a mix of two, three, and four-bedroom properties. Crucially, the scheme includes 29 homes for social rent and 11 homes for shared ownership, providing a pathway to security for local families and young people who have been priced out of the market.

Putting Energy Efficiency First
For the Liberal Democrats, affordability is about more than just the rent—it is about the cost of living. All 40 homes are designed to achieve high EPC ratings. This commitment to energy efficiency ensures that residents will benefit from lower utility bills, a core tenet of the Liberal Democrat mission to end fuel poverty.

"It is heart-breaking that so many families across Yorkshire face winter without a safe, warm place to call home. We must set ambitious targets for social housing—building the 150,000 social homes a year the country needs—to ensure everyone has the basic right to shelter."— Tom Gordon MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson and Yorkshire MP.

Looking Ahead
The Sands Reach development is expected to be fully completed by Summer 2028. The East Riding Liberal Democrats will continue to monitor the progress of this project to ensure it remains a community-focused development.

Our Policy: A Better Future for Housing
While this development is a positive start, the East Riding Liberal Democrats continue to campaign for a "Fair Deal" for residents. Our national and local policies focus on:
Building More Social Homes: We are calling for a national target of 150,000 social homes a year.
Empowering Local Councils: Giving local authorities the powers and funding they need to build their own social and affordable housing directly.
Warmer Homes: A ten-year emergency programme to insulate Britain’s homes, ensuring all new builds meet the highest environmental standards.
Infrastructure First: Ensuring developers provide the necessary services—like GPs and schools—before homes are completed.
