A Shining Example of Community Spirit: The Hessle Christmas Switch-On 2025.

As the winter nights draw in, there is nothing quite like the warm glow of community to lift the spirits. On Friday, November 28th, the heart of Hessle was transformed into a festive wonderland for the annual Christmas Lights Switch-On, and your local Liberal Democrat councillors were out in force to celebrate one of the most anticipated dates in our town’s calendar.

From the busy stalls along The Weir to the packed crowds in Hessle Square, the evening was a masterclass in local community pride.

The event featuring a vibrant mix of festive fairground rides, a Christmas market brimming with local crafts, and the ever-popular Santa’s Grotto.

Local Talent Takes Center Stage

One of the most heartening aspects of the 2025 celebration was the emphasis on local talent. Throughout the event, live performances from local choirs and musicians filled the air, providing a soundtrack of festive cheer that resonated throughout The Square.

For Lib Dems, events like these are more than just a countdown to Christmas; they are a vital investment in our "Shop Local" ethos. By drawing thousands of residents into the town center, the Switch-On provides a significant boost to our independent retailers and hospitality businesses during their most critical trading month.

A Message from Cllr John Bovill

Hessle Town Councillor John Bovill, a tireless advocate for the area on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, was among those cheering as the town’s magnificent Christmas tree was finally illuminated, the switch was turned on by the Hessle Town Mayor Councillor Nick Adams. Reflecting on the importance of the evening, Councillor Bovill shared:

"Hessle is a fantastic place to live, largely because of the incredible community feel we have here. Local government and businesses are still navigating testing times, but events like the Switch-On prove that our town's character is as strong as ever. My colleagues and I remain committed to doing our utmost to help Hessle maintain this unique charm and remain a vibrant, desirable place to live and work."

Building a Brighter Future Together

The success of this year's event is a credit to the hard work of the Hessle Town Council and the army of volunteers who worked behind the scenes. In an era where many high streets are struggling, the vitality of Hessle’s celebration serves as a beacon of what is possible when local representatives and residents work hand-in-hand.

As your local Lib Dem team, we remain dedicated to protecting these community traditions. We believe that by fostering a sense of belonging and supporting our local economy, we can ensure that Hessle continues to shine—not just at Christmas, but all year round.
