Prestongate Improvements Progressing Nicely -putting Hessle first.

​After tireless campaigning by your local Liberal Democrat councillors, the long-awaited £700,000 refurbishment of Hessle’s Prestongate finally began in October 2025.

This is a crucial step forward for our town centre, delivering on our commitment to support local residents and businesses.

​The comprehensive scheme is replacing the tired, patchwork surfacing with smarter, high-quality paving and stonework, create refreshed public spaces, install new street furniture and planters, and implement better drainage. The goal is clear and simple: to make Prestongate cleaner, safer, more welcoming, and more durable, boosting footfall and securing the future of our independent local trade.

​Local Lib Dem councillors Simon Pickering and John Bovill have welcomed the start of the works, which they have championed for years.

​"We are absolutely delighted to see work finally starting on Prestongate. This £700,000 investment is the direct result of pressure from the local Liberal Democrat team. Prestongate is the beating heart of Hessle, and these long-overdue improvements will make a real, tangible difference. This transformation will create a much more attractive, durable town centre, firmly supporting our beloved independent businesses and giving all residents a place they can be truly proud of."​ Cllr Simon Pickering.

​“We know that major building work, while necessary, can cause inconvenience. We want to sincerely thank our traders and residents in advance for their patience. We have pushed the Council to ensure the works are being carefully phased—including the pasuse or the festive trading season—to keep disruption to an absolute minimum, with access maintained throughout. This significant investment is about delivering a Prestongate that is better placed to thrive for years to come.” ​Cllr John Bovill .

​The design has been shaped by extensive consultation with the community, traders, shoppers, and Hessle Town Council. This is a project developed with the people of Hessle, ensuring the final result reflects the needs of local life, enhancing the area’s café culture and shopping environment while remaining functional for businesses and delivery access.

​Last night, viewers across the country and many of us here in East Yorkshire, tuned in to BBC One to witness a moment of pure community magic. The DIY SOS: Big Build special for the Cherry Tree Youth Hub was a heart-swelling reminder of what can be achieved when a community refuses to take "no" for an answer. ​For years, the youth of the Cherry Tree area have been the forgotten face of local provision. Since the pandemic, they were forced to meet in a gazebo in a park, enduring the biting East Yorkshire winters while waiting for a place to call their own.
