Local Reading Heroes Needed: Can You Help East Riding’s Children Get a Fair Deal?
Here in the East Riding, we believe every child deserves the best possible start in life. But to make that happen, we need more than just promises, we need community action!
A fantastic charity called Schoolreaders is looking for volunteers right here in our towns and villages. They need people to visit local primary schools and spend a little time listening to children read. It’s a simple way to help our local kids find their voice.
The Challenge in Our Classrooms
Recent figures show that one in four children across the country left primary school last year without reaching the reading level they need. In East Riding, Schoolreaders already works with over 50 schools, but many more children are still waiting for a reading partner.
When a child struggles to read, they can feel left out. The Liberal Democrats believe in a "fair deal" where no child is held back by their background. By volunteering, you can help close that gap right here in our local community.
Why Literacy Matters for Everyone
The Lib Dems are fighting for investment in our children’s future. We know that being a confident reader is the key to a child reaching their full potential.
But this isn't just about school. Did you know that around 7 million adults in the UK struggle with reading? This makes everyday life (like reading a doctor’s letter or a bus schedule) much harder. By helping a child now, you are making sure they don't grow up to be an adult who struggles.
When our children succeed, our whole society wins. Better literacy means a stronger local economy for East Riding and a fairer world where everyone can contribute.
“Reading is one of the great pleasures in life. It can spark the imagination, opening young eyes to magic and wonder; it enhances empathy, opening young hearts to new emotions; and it increases learning, helping young people develop concentration skills and discipline. To be able to help a child do all this just by listening to them read is amazing. I would encourage anyone with a spare hour or so a week to find out more and volunteer.” Cllr Linda Johnson
Will You Be a Reading Hero?
This year, Schoolreaders wants to give 1.5 million reading sessions to children. To do this, they need more people like you to help out for just an hour or two a week.
By giving a little bit of time, you can help a child find a love for books that will last a lifetime. It’s about more than just words on a page; it’s about giving every child the "fair deal".
If you want to help give East Riding’s children a fair deal, sign up as a reading volunteer with School Readers today.
"Volunteers are the bedrock of our communities... They deserve recognition and all our appreciation." Munira Wilson MP
