Riding Liberal Democrats Demand "Fair Deal" for Homeowners: Labour's Leasehold Reforms Branded "Timid".

The East Riding Liberal Democrats have joined the growing national outcry against the Government’s lackluster leasehold and management fee reforms, arguing that while a cap on ground rent is a small step forward, it falls far short of ending the "fleecehold" scandal plaguing residents across our region.

From the coastal towns of Bridlington and Withernsea to the growing developments in Beverley and Goole, thousands of local residents remain trapped in an outdated, feudal system. The Liberal Democrats are calling for an immediate end to all ground rents on existing leases, a strict cap on service and management charges, and the total abolition of leasehold altogether—measures that Labour’s current proposals conspicuously avoid.

National Pressure for Real Change
Responding to the Government’s announcement of a £250 ground rent cap, Liberal Democrat Housing Spokesperson Gideon Amos MP made it clear that the party believes the Government has not gone far enough:
“This news will come as a relief for thousands of leaseholders who have had their finances wrecked by spiralling ground rents. But the Government cannot call this job done. Liberal Democrats demand an end to the absurd, feudal system of leasehold and management charges for good. People are being fleeced by a system that restricts their rights in a way that is indefensible in the 21st century.”

A System That Fails Residents
While the Labour Government’s proposed reforms acknowledge the issue, they stop short of the decisive action needed to protect homeowners. Locally, we see the impact of this "piecemeal tinkering" every day through extortionate charges, a fundamental lack of control over one's own property, and the "fleecehold" trap where private firms manage public spaces for endless, rising fees.
The Liberal Democrats’ bolder plan offers a stark contrast to Labour’s timid approach. While Labour proposes only limited capping of ground rents and excludes management fees on freehold estates, the Liberal Democrats are committed to abolishing them entirely.

Similarly, where Labour offers mere transparency tweaks for leasehold service charges, we are fighting for legally enforceable caps. Most importantly, while the Government pursues incremental reform, the Liberal Democrats are demanding the full abolition of the leasehold and management fee system to finally give homeowners the security they deserve.

Standing Up for East Riding
The frustration felt here in the East Riding mirrors the national sentiment. Cllr Denis Healy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on East Riding Council, added:

"The new cap on leasehold ground rents is a small relief, but frankly, it’s too timid. It completely ignores the 'fleecehold' trap facing residents in newbuild estates across the East Riding, who are still being crushed by outrageous management fees. Our community deserves better than a feudal system dressed up as homeownership. This half-measure is a disappointment; we’re fighting for real reform so that when you buy a home in our region, you actually own it, without the hidden costs.”
