Bridlington Dental Desert: Liberal Democrats Demand End to Decay of NHS dentists.
The Liberal Democrats have long warned that the Conservatives have allowed "dental deserts" to flourish, leaving towns like Bridlington in a state of decay. While news that NHS dental places in the town could nearly double is a welcome relief for a community pushed to the brink, the party argues that this intervention is a long-overdue response to a system that remains fundamentally broken under the current government.
For years, Bridlington residents have been forced to choose between agonizing pain or financial ruin. The proposed "Live Well Campus" at the Crown Community Centre, set to provide 840 NHS appointments a week, is a necessary response to what the Liberal Democrats describe as years of "disregard" for rural and coastal healthcare.
A Crisis of Access and Affordability
The human cost of the current shortage in the East Riding is stark. Local residents, including wheelchair users and those on fixed incomes, have been forced to travel as far as Hull or Beverley just to access emergency care, often facing travel costs and private fees that they simply cannot afford.
"It is a national scandal that people are being forced to resort to 'DIY dentistry' or travel hundreds of miles just to see a dentist. The Conservative government has overseen the total collapse of local health services." - Daisy Cooper MP
In Bridlington, the reality has been grim:
Total Gridlock: The town's sole remaining NHS provider, mydentist, has been unable to accept new patients for some time.
Financial Strain: Residents have reported paying £200 for private extractions because NHS care was non-existent.
A Lost Generation: Children as young as eight have been unable to secure basic check-ups, risking long-term health complications that will only cost the NHS more in the future.
“The new facility will be welcome by all residents, especially parents. The lack of dental services for our children is a disgrace and as put these youngsters at risk of long term damage, which hopefully the new clinic will help end. “ Cllr Mike Heslop-Mullens
The Liberal Democrat Solution
While the two new NHS contracts worth £3m are a step forward, the Liberal Democrats maintain that local "patches" aren't enough to fix a national crisis. The party is campaigning for a fundamental overhaul of the NHS dental contract to ensure that practicing as an NHS dentist is once again a viable and attractive career path.
Key Liberal Democrat dental policies include:
Emergency Funding: An immediate injection of cash to prevent more practices from going private or closing.
Contract Reform: Scrapping the "broken" UDA (Units of Dental Activity) system that penalises dentists for taking on complex NHS cases.
Supervised Brushing: Introducing supervised toothbrushing in schools to protect children’s teeth in areas like the East Riding.
Looking Ahead
The East Riding Liberal Democrats believe that while the expansion into a 17-surgery facility is a victory for local residents, it should never have reached this point of desperation.
The Liberal Democrats remain committed to ensuring that the "postcode lottery of dental care" is ended once and for all.
The contracts are expected to be confirmed on 3 March. Local campaigners will be watching closely to ensure these promises translate into real chairs, real dentists, and an end to the "impossible" search for an appointment in Bridlington.
