Building a Fairer Future: Why the Care Sector is the Heart of Our Community.

For too long, the essential work of caring for our loved ones has been undervalued by a distant Westminster government. In Bridlington and across the East Riding, we know the truth: social care is the backbone of a functioning society. It is not just a service; it is a commitment to dignity, community, and the local economy.

The upcoming Big Care Career Fair at Bridlington Spa isn't just a job fair—it’s an invitation to join a sector that the Liberal Democrats are fighting to transform into a professional, highly-respected, and properly funded pillar of the UK.

A Ticking Time Bomb: Why We Must Act Now
The crisis in our hospitals often starts with the crisis in our care system. Liberal Democrat Health and Social Care Spokesperson, Helen Morgan MP, has been clear about the stakes for communities like ours:
"Challenges in social care are a ticking time bomb... You can’t fix the NHS without fixing care. We know there are thousands of patients in hospital who are medically fit to be discharged but are stuck because the social care packages are not available."
— Helen Morgan MP

By joining the care sector, you aren't just taking a job—you are part of the solution to "unblocking" our health service and ensuring our neighbors in the East Riding can recover in the comfort of their own homes.

More Than Just a Job: A Career of Variety
The Liberal Democrat vision for care is holistic. To provide world-class support, we need a diverse ecosystem of talent. It is a common misconception that "care" only involves medical tasks. In reality, the sector relies on a massive range of skills:
Technical & Admin: IT support and maintenance.
Community & Environment: Gardening, driving, and planning.
Support Services: Cooking and domestic maintenance.

Whether you are a tech-whiz or have a green thumb, your skills are needed to create a supportive environment for our most vulnerable.

Standing Up for the Workforce
Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Ed Davey, who has been a carer for much of his own life, has made fixing social care his "burning ambition." The party is campaigning for a Fair Deal for Care, which includes:
A Carer’s Minimum Wage: Boosting pay by £2 an hour above the standard minimum wage to reflect the skill and importance of the role.
Professional Status: Establishing a "Royal College of Care Workers" to give the profession the same status and career progression as nursing.
Free Personal Care: Moving toward a system where the care you need at home is free, ensuring no one has to sell their home to afford dignity.
"our politicians must finally rises to the challenge of fixing care... We must make careers in social care more attractive and value experienced staff to improve retention."
— Sir Ed Davey, Liberal Democrat Leader
