Fighting for a Fair Deal: Lib Dems Back Action on Damp and Mould in East Riding

The East Riding Liberal Democrats are calling for a "Fair Deal" for local renters as the council renews its Healthy Homes campaign.
In a partnership with Hull City Council, the initiative, funded by the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, is using social media, GP surgeries, and public transport hubs to sound the alarm on the health risks of substandard housing.

The Liberal Democrats, the primary opposition on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, have long argued that the Conservative-led administration must do more than just issue advice; they must hold rogue landlords accountable. Untreated damp and mould are linked to severe respiratory issues, immune system suppression, and skin conditions, risks that the Lib Dems believe no resident should have to face in 2026.

Councillor Denis Healy, East Riding Liberal Democrat group Leader, has frequently highlighted the disparity in housing quality across the region. Commenting on the need for community-focused action, he stated:

"People in the East Riding want to see their local representatives standing up for them and being their voice... It’s about listening to residents and acting on their concerns."

The push for better housing standards is a cornerstone of Liberal Democrat policy. Nationally, the party has campaigned to expand "Awaab’s Law", which requires social landlords to fix damp and mould within strict timeframes, to include the private rental sector as well.

Gideon Amos MP, Liberal Democrat Housing Spokesperson, recently emphasised the urgency of improving the nation’s housing stock:
"The government must act now to ensure everyone has a safe, warm and dry home. This means strengthening the rights of renters and ensuring that local authorities have the resources they need to tackle rogue landlords."

The Lib Dem Policy for Healthy Homes
The Liberal Democrats are committed to a comprehensive overhaul of housing standards, including:

The Decent Homes Standard: Strengthening and enforcing this standard across all tenures to ensure properties are fit for human habitation.

National Insulation Programme: A massive investment in home retrofitting to prevent the cold and damp conditions that lead to mould growth.

Ending "No-Fault" Evictions: The Liberal Democrats support the right for tenants feel safen in their home and able to report maintenance issues without any worries of reproductions.

While the current council campaign encourages residents to ventilate homes and use extractor fans, the Liberal Democrats maintain that the ultimate responsibility lies with property owners. With 26 local letting agents already backing the campaign, the Lib Dems are pushing for even stricter enforcement to ensure that "advice" turns into "action."
