Flipping for a Cause: Team White Ribbon Takes on the Beverley Pancake Race!

The annual Beverley Pancake Race returned to the town centre today, and while the temperatures were biting, the community spirit was as warm as a fresh crepe.

Among the local leaders braving the cold was Cllr Paul Coe; Beverley Town Councillor, who led a dedicated team in the relay to raise vital awareness for White Ribbon UK. While the event is famous for its light-hearted competition and occasional "pancake mishaps," the message behind the team’s participation was deeply serious.

A Cross-Council Effort for White Ribbon
This wasn't just any relay team; it was a powerful show of solidarity across different levels of local government. Joining Cllr Paul Coe in the thick of the action was Cllr Denis Healy, Liberal Democrat Group Leader on East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

By swapping the council chamber for the race track, both Paul and Denis aimed to use this high-profile town tradition to keep a crucial conversation at the forefront of our community’s mind.

"It was certainly a bit cold for flipping pancakes, but the turnout from the people of Beverley was wonderful to see. The race is a fantastic tradition, but more importantly, it provided a platform to support White Ribbon. We want to ensure that Beverley remains a place where everyone feels safe, and raising awareness is a key part of that mission." Cllr Paul Coe

Leading by Example: Beverley Town Council
The East Riding Liberal Democrats are proud to support the ongoing work of Beverley Town Council, which is an officially accredited White Ribbon member. This commitment to ending violence against women and girls is a year-round mission, steered by the council’s dedicated White Ribbon Champion, Cllr Linda Johnson.

Linda’s work ensures that the principles of the White Ribbon promise,to never excuse, commit, or remain silent about violence, are woven into the fabric of our local governance. said:

"As a White Ribbon Member Council, Beverley Town Council supported the White Ribbon March and Vigil on November 25th last year and have followed that up by creating more awareness through the Pancake Race." Cllr Linda Johnson

A "Flippin' Great" Day for Beverley
Organised by the Beverley Rotary Club in partnership with the Town Council, the race saw teams dashing through Toll Gavel, pans in hand. It was a fantastic reminder that even on a freezing February morning, Beverley knows how to come together for a great cause.

Having local representatives like Paul, Denis, and Linda championing this cause, whether at a solemn vigil or a community pancake race, demonstrates a collective dedication to a safer, more respectful Beverley town and wider East Riding.
