A Scandal in Our Countryside: Liberal Democrats Slam West Newton Bitcoin Mining Plans

The East Riding Liberal Democrats are voicing their outrage following revelations that a newly licensed gas field in West Newton near Hull could be used to power Bitcoin mining rather than providing much-needed relief to the UK’s energy grid.

Despite the ongoing climate emergency and a national cost-of-living crisis, the company has secured approval from the Environment Agency to conduct "low-pressure" fracking at the West Newton site.  Due the environmental and safety impacts, the Liberal Democrats have been critical of the plans from the outset.

"If the pressures are sufficient to fracture rock, then it is fracking, plain and simple," "We cannot allow 'lower-volume' labels to mask the very real uncertainties regarding seismic activity and groundwater protection." Cllr Phil Redshaw

However, the new revelations make project simple not worth the risks; istead of prioritising local energy security, the company intends to build an on site power station to fuel a data center dedicated to the highly energy intensive practice of mining cryptocurrency.

Profits Over People
For many residents in the East Riding, the news feels like a betrayal of the local environment for the sake of speculative digital currency. While the field is estimated to hold 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas, the developers have admitted that using a private supply to mine Bitcoin is simply a "cheap" way to fund their further expansion.
“We’re being told to accept fracking at West Newton, with all the risks it brings to our countryside, roads, and quality of life, only for that gas to be burned powering Bitcoin mining instead of helping local homes and businesses. That’s not energy security for East Riding; it’s a scandal that puts short-term profit ahead of our community and environment.” Cllr Phil Redshaw
A Conflict of Interest with Climate Goals
The Liberal Democrats have long campaigned for a transition to clean, renewable energy, arguing that the UK’s future lies in wind, solar, and tidal power, not in reviving onshore fossil fuel extraction.

The West Newton project highlights a glaring loophole in current regulations. While full-scale fracking is banned due to seismic risks, "small-scale stimulation" techniques remain permitted. Campaigners argue this is a distinction without a difference for the local communities who must live with the consequences.

"We have a duty to advocate for our communities, for our environment, and for the long-term wellbeing of our region. If the government has committed to ending these methods of extraction, then let us see that commitment honoured, and honoured swiftly." Cllr Denis Healy

Key Concerns for East Riding:
Environmental Impact: Burning fossil fuels for Bitcoin mining, one of the most energy intensive activities on the planet, contradicts the UK’s 2026 climate commitments.

Seismic Activity: While the developers label this as "low-pressure stimulation," the history of onshore drilling in the UK is plagued by seismic risks. Any geological disturbance in the East Riding carries the unacceptable threat of earth tremors that can damage property and distress residents.

Groundwater Contamination: The drilling process requires piercing the vital aquifers that provide our region’s water. We are deeply concerned that any failure in well integrity or chemical runoff could lead to the irreversible contamination of our groundwater, threatening both public health and local agriculture.

Infrastructure Strain: Increased industrial activity at the site threatens local roads and the tranquility of the East Yorkshire countryside.

Energy Insecurity: At a time of high energy bills, gas that could be heating homes or supporting local industry is being diverted to a private data center.

Our Position: Green Energy, Not Gimmicks
While Reabold Resources suggests that they may eventually connect the site to the national grid or industrial centers, the "initial phase" of Bitcoin mining proves where their priorities lie.

The East Riding Liberal Democrats believe our energy policy should be focused on insulating homes, lowering bills, and investing in the green jobs of the future. We cannot allow our landscape to be treated as a playground for "high-potential, low-risk" fossil fuel ventures that offer no tangible benefit to the people of East Yorkshire.

"This is not ideological. It is practical. It is proportionate, and it reflects a truth that residents across the East Riding instinctively understand: that this project is not about our energy security and is putting  our environment and communities at risk." Cllr Denis Healy

We will continue to stand with local residents and environmental campaigners to oppose projects that sacrifice our green belt for "socially questionable" activities. It is time for an energy strategy that puts community, climate, and common sense first.
