Lib Dems Push for Smarter, Long-Term Solutions to East Riding’s Pothole Crisis

Potholes remain a primary concern for local communities, serving as a frequent point of frustration for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
Polls confirm what many of us across the East Riding already know: our roads are in a state of neglect. Nearly two in five (38%) people in the UK have had their vehicles damaged or have been personally injured by potholes. Even more concerning, 61% of residents say the roads they use daily are poorly maintained.

"This is one of the most common issues that councillors hear about from residents," Councillor Margaret Corless.

The Liberal Democrats are spearheading a drive for more durable, long-term solutions to the persistent problem of potholes across the East Riding of Yorkshire, aiming to move away from temporary fixes toward comprehensive road resurfacing.

A Call for Quality Over Quick Fixes
Currently, residents are encouraged to report road defects directly to the local authority via the East Riding Council website. However, the existing intervention criteria and the quality of the subsequent repairs have drawn criticism.

"If you do [report it], the pothole will be attended to, but often residents are disappointed to find that the pothole is not deep enough for attention or, when it is attended to, the ‘patching’ job is not good enough and the problems recur very quickly," Cllr Corless

The reliance on short-term patching rather than full-scale restoration has led to a cycle of repeated repairs on the same stretches of road. According to the Liberal Democrats, a shift in strategy is urgently required to protect local infrastructure and make better use of public funds.

"We see this on many streets in our wards and it is clear that resurfacing is often what is needed," "One good repair rather than repeated quick ones." Cllr Corless

National Data Highlights Room for Improvement
The push for reform comes amid underwhelming national performance ratings for the region’s transport infrastructure. Data from the Department for Transport (DfT) indicates that East Riding's overall road management requires attention.

"East Riding has been rated Amber by the Department of Transport, with the exception of spend which is red rated," Cllr Corless

In contrast, the Liberal Democrats point to successful highway management models in other parts of the country as a blueprint for Yorkshire.
"The Lib Dems are researching better and more lasting solutions to dealing with potholes across the East Riding of Yorkshire," "Delighted to see that Lib Dem Councils are now leading the way in England. Liberal Democrats run four of the top councils for road maintenance and the top council for fewest potholes." Cllr Corless
How to Report a Pothole
While the campaign for systemic and it will take time before we see infrastructure reform,  residents are still urged to flag dangerous road defects. Potholes can be reported directly to the local authority by visiting the East Riding Council Road Maintenance Portal.

Keep Us Informed: Once you’ve reported the issue to the council, please let your local Liberal Democrat councillor know so we can track the progress and hold the authority to account. If your area isn't represented by a Lib Dem councillor yet, we still encourage you to raise your concerns with your current ward councillor and, of course, let us know if you feel the problem is being ignored.

Together, we can push for the fair funding and high-quality repairs our residents deserve
