New Speed Enforcement Site Confirmed for Pocklington Following Local Campaign
Liberal Democrat councillors and residents of Pocklington have secured a victory in the ongoing effort to improve road safety, as Safer Roads Humber officially adds The Balk to its list of mobile speed enforcement locations.
The move comes after a concerted effort by the East Riding Liberal Democrats and local law enforcement to address mounting safety concerns. Councillor Dale Needham, who has been instrumental in coordinating the response, noted that the intervention was a direct result of community feedback.
"We are delighted to see that The Balk in Pocklington will host a site for visits from Safer Roads Humber," "I’ve been working with the Pocklington Neighbourhood Policing Team on the increased complaints from residents of speeding along this stretch of The Balk." Cllr Dale Needham
A Community-Led Approach
The initiative on The Balk is part of a broader strategy to manage traffic throughout the town. While mobile enforcement vans provide a formal deterrent, Cllr Needham highlighted the vital role played by local citizens in maintaining safety on other arterial routes.
Demand for these measures is driven by a clear consensus among locals and it is our pleasure as councillors to support them to achieve this outcome.
"Pocklington also has a great team of Speedwatch volunteers, who regularly check speeds on other roads in and out of town," "The majority of residents are concerned about road safety, and we have seen for ourselves that the speed limits on this route were often abused." Cllr Dale Needham
The Reality of the Risks
The push for stricter enforcement is backed by sobering regional data. Speed remains a primary factor in the majority of serious incidents across the area:
Fatalities: Speed was a factor in 59% of road deaths in 2024.
Serious Injuries: Approximately 6 in 10 fatal or serious injury collisions in the region are linked to excessive speed.
Overall Impact: Yorkshire and The Humber saw 12,345 road casualties in 2024, with 137 of those resulting in fatalities.
How Residents Can Take Action
The East Riding Liberal Democrats have stressed that while The Balk is a significant step forward, the issue of speeding persists across other areas of Pocklington. They are calling on the public to remain proactive in three key ways:
Report Issues: Direct concerns regarding specific roads to Ward Councillors to help prioritise new enforcement sites.
Incident Logging: Report specific dangerous driving incidents to the local police team by calling 101.
Volunteer: Join your local Community Speedwatch Group to provide a visible deterrent in residential neighborhoods.
By combining official enforcement with community vigilance, local leaders hope to see a significant reduction in the casualty figures that have impacted the region over the past year.
