Lib Dem Councillors Champion Expansion of "Sustainable Villages" Initiative.
Cllr Margaret Corless and East Riding Liberal Democrats are backing plans to roll out successful community-led green initiatives across more local villages, following the proven success of a non-profit organisation in North Ferriby.
Sustainable Ferriby, a Community Interest Company (CIC), was recently featured in the "Best of East Riding Eco Tour" for its work helping households and community groups cut carbon emissions and slash energy bills.
Local Lib Dem Councillor Margaret Corless and Mie Mie Kyaing, are now working with the organisation to expand the scheme to neighbouring villages. This scheme very much aligns with Liberal Democrat policies to empower communities, decentralise energy production, and accelerate the transition to net-zero.
Proving the Power of Local Action
Councillor Margaret Corless is very proud to be the representative for South Hunsley, with groups such as Sustainable Ferriby leading the way and an inspiration to the wider East Riding.
"Sustainable Ferriby is a not-for-profit organisation that has done a great job helping community organisations and households, and their projects in Ferriby were featured in the best of East Riding Eco Tour," "Community organisations can benefit hugely by the resultant cost savings and get help with obtaining grant funding." Cllr Margaret Corless
The drive to expand these projects comes at a time when the East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been highlighting the benefits of community-driven renewable energy schemes to mark World Environment Day. Initiatives such as these directly support the Liberal Democrat commitment to a "green transition" that tackles the climate crisis while simultaneously easing the cost-of-living crisis by driving down household energy costs and reducing emissions.
Taking the Initiative to Swanland and Beyond
The success in North Ferriby has sparked interest in neighboring villages. Cllr Corless and Lib Dem campaigner Mie Mie Kyaing, recently attended Sustainable Ferriby's "Back to School" event to see the progress firsthand and gather inspiration for expansion.
"Recently, Mie Mie and I attended the Sustainable Ferriby Back to School event," "We spoke to so many village organisations and residents that have benefited hugely from this initiative, and there are so many ideas that would help community organisations throughout our villages." Cllr Corless
Work is already underway to bring these ideas to more residents.
"We have been helping Sustainable Ferriby to extend the initiative to our other villages, and discussions have already commenced with four community organisations in Swanland.
East Riding Liberal Democrats would love to see similar schemes all across East Riding and encourage communities to get in touch with Sustainable Ferriby for ideas of how to get started" Cllr Corless and Mie Mie Kyaing
The Vision for a Net-Zero Future
Sustainable Ferriby pictures a near future where every like-minded community organisation in North Ferriby and its adjacent villages is actively progressing towards net-zero. By becoming more economically and environmentally sustainable, these groups can act as beacons for local residents and businesses, encouraging others to make green choices.
This grassroots approach mirrors the Liberal Democrats’ core environmental policies, which advocate for massive investment in community energy, local grid decoupling, and funding for local authorities to lead insulation and renewable schemes tailored to their specific areas.
Looking ahead, Simon Hudson, Director at Sustainable Ferriby CIC, emphasised that the project is just getting started.
"We've demonstrated what's possible at a community level, but there's much more we can do together," The next phase is about reaching more households, working with schools, and creating opportunities like a community energy club so people can be part of something bigger.”
