Local Councillors Back Tough Action as CCTV Catches Drivers Littering.

Local councillors have strongly backed a high-tech crackdown on environmental crime after two motorists were caught on camera dumping rubbish on a major regional road.
​The drivers were captured by East Riding of Yorkshire Council CCTV cameras pulling into a layby just outside Beverley. Despite public bins being provided at the site, both individuals opted to discard their rubbish onto the ground.

​Using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology, enforcement teams tracked down the registered keepers of both vehicles, issuing each a £200 fixed penalty notice.
​A Double-Edged Weapon Against Environmental Crime
​While the cameras successfully caught the littering motorists in the act, council figures have revealed that the technology was originally deployed to combat much larger-scale illegal dumping.

​Liberal Democrat Councillor Denis Healy, who represents the St. Mary’s ward in Beverley, echoed these sentiments, expressing frustration over the drivers' thoughtless behavior.
​"Our beautiful East Riding countryside is something we should all take pride in, not treat as a personal dustbin," "There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of behavior, especially when the council has gone to the effort of providing bins right there in the layby. ​The Cost of Blighting the Countryside
​The council emphasized that even small items, such as the takeaway cups and cigarette butts discarded in these recent incidents, accumulate to cause significant visual and environmental damage.
​Under current legislation, local authorities hold strong powers to penalize offenders:
​Fixed Penalty Notice: An immediate fine of £200 for minor littering offences.
​Court Prosecution: If a case escalates to a magistrates' court, offenders can face a maximum fine of £2,500.

​East Riding Liberal Democrats and the Council areburging motorists to either use the bins provided in laybys or simply keep their rubbish in their vehicles until they reach home.
