Urgent Update on Flood Risk Needed for Creyke Beck Amid Energy Project Surge

Concerns over local flood resilience reached a head at a recent meeting of the Council's Environment and Regeneration Committee, where Councillor Jeremy Wilcock formally urged authorities to commission an immediate, comprehensive update to the area's flood risk assessment.

The push for a revised assessment centres on the unprecedented cumulative impact of 11 major energy projects currently converging on Creyke Beck. Cllr Wilcock questioned whether existing council modelling adequately accounts for the recent expansion of the Creyke Beck infrastructure, associated cabling networks, and the proposed Clean Air solar panel site, a development that features intensive battery storage situated directly above vulnerable flood zones.

Highlighting the complex web of environmental pressures facing the region, Cllr Wilcock pointed to compounding dangers such as gully erosion, soil compaction, altered run-off flow rates, and the intensive water demands of the solar facility itself. The proposed solar array's cleaning regime alone requires millions of litres of water twice a year over three-to-four-month periods.

"Not to address these factors would surely be negligent," Cllr Wilcock warned, stressing that local infrastructure must adapt quickly to prevent severe downstream consequences from unchecked industrial clustering.
